Tips For Locking In Your Wedding DJ

Your wedding day is one of the biggest days of your life – quite often a once in a lifetime experience. You want it to be memorable for all the right reasons. There are so many things which should be perfect: your dress, the flowers, the setting of the ceremony, the décor, the food (especially the cake) and drink, and the music. Is yours to be a themed wedding or a destination one, church or civil?

Music Could Be The Cherry On The Cake

Few people realise it, but music is a crucial dimension to any event. Unfortunately, it is often the afterthought once the rest of the arrangements have been organised. However, the party-starting music for entrances, the perfect playlist for dinner, and the music for the wedding couple’s first dance and subsequent celebrations have different components. Only a highly skilled wedding DJ will be able to bring this all together without marring the mood – or worse – subjecting people to an artless silence.

Do it quick: Once the date and venue are finalised, you should immediately hire a wedding DJ (or at least as soon as possible). Check whether the wedding DJ of your choice is available and able to travel to your wedding’s destination or venue. Since there is only a handful who may match your criteria and requirements, you don’t want to contact someone only to find that wedding DJ already booked. Unless you’ve chosen a date when few people would marry, you’re in a sellers’ market. Research, compare, and lock them in!

Sealing the deal is beneficial both ways: It gives your wedding DJ time to explore what you are really looking for while ensuring that you can focus on other details. With sufficient lead time, a crafty wedding DJ compiles the kind of playlist your dream of.

Since people will mostly remember the entertainment over the food and beverages, it makes sense to place emphasis on the music. From when you enter the reception to the first dance, the music should reflect your character. A smart DJ also checks with the bridal couple – you and your partner – to confirm if there is any specific piece of music or song to which you might have been practising a routine first-dance.

Play it safe: Contingency, contingency, contingency! It sounds very corporate. Yes – but this word is so relative to your big day! Make a point of choosing a wedding DJ who has backup plans for everything. Some questions to ask are: ‘What if you’re sick (knock on wood) on the day?’, What if your equipment fails?’ and ‘What if the wireless microphone cuts out mid-speech?’. Controlling? Some may say so, but we think otherwise.

It’s your big day and everything should go to plan, with a Plan B in the back pocket. This will ensure that there are no embarrassing or stressful moments on the day/evening. Also, remember to check whether your DJ has public liability insurance, which many public venues require. You should verify whether the quotation you’ve received is for the DJ alone, or covers additional staff required onsite, the hire of equipment, and cost of setting up the performance.

Wrapping It Up

There are plenty of DJs for weddings available around town. It’s about choosing the right DJ by doing your homework and asking the right questions. It’s like the saying goes, ‘if you fail to plan, you plan to fail’. Good luck with your hunt and wishing you all the best!
