In this week’s blog, we caught up with one of our DJ’s before the start of their gig – Jacob Tengbeh. He has been with the team since the beginning and is one of the most popular dudes amongst our crew. We used this catch-up as an opportunity to get to know him better, so we can share a story of his and advice.
Marel: Welcome Jacob, the first of many questions, we’ll start with the cliché question. Why did you start DJ’ing?
Jacob: For the love of music. Love of different kinds of music in different formats like tapes, records, digital. I grew up in a family of music who played music all the time. I love to share this with other people.
Marel: How beautiful and touching. This next one I always ask people, what was your craziest gig?
Jacob: Craziest gig. The craziest gig I threw a party. It was a party for me leaving. I invited like 10 people on Facebook. That 10 people invited another 10 people. That 10 people invited another 10 people. Come the night there was like 2000 people that rocked up.
Marel: Whaaat!?
Jacob: Yeah, it was insane!
Marel: I was honestly expecting like 200, but 2000!
Jacob: Yeah, we rocked up and we thought, sick, let’s charge everyone. We charged everyone $10 to get in and used the money to purchase more DJ equipment. Young and naive haha!
Marel: Last question. What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone starting out?
Jacob: Where you’d start I’d say is go have a look at other DJ’s. Go clubbing, go have a look at events, have a look at what they’re doing right, what they’re doing wrong. Talk to DJ’s and pick up from different people because everyone has different skills. If you can pick up something from everyone you’ll become a better DJ yourself.
