5 Things Your Canberra DJ Must Have

There are tools of the trade that are essential to performing tasks. This is no different when it comes to DJs. This includes a mixture of tangibles and intangibles. We break through all the noise to discuss the 5 must-haves for any DJ within Canberra, and beyond!

1. A High-Quality Sound System

Your DJ will be playing a mixture of smooth classics, some throwbacks, and then to banging tunes later in the night (if this format is your cup of tea, that is!). Great sound is crucial and often overlooked. A lot of the time people don’t know what a ‘high-quality sound system’ is. You will want to ensure the speakers are reputable brands and industry standards.

Think cars – some great brands are Mercedes, BMW and Audi. When it comes to speakers, the equivalent to these cars when we’re talking speakers are JBL, RCF and QSC to name a few. Discuss this with your DJ to ensure great sound for everyone.

2. Sound-Activated Lights

The lighting used needs to add atmosphere, yet still be presentable. Sound-activated lights are the answer here. They move to the beat of the music, including speeding up and slowing down. These can easily be placed on a T-Bar stand for a sleek look. Having at least 2 of these included in your package is perfect for up to around 100 guests.

3. A Good Quality Wireless Microphone

We’re well beyond the days of using wired microphones. Cables everywhere and hanging near the DJ booth is not what people look forward to. The ability is to speak freely wherever you want in the venue, be it next to the cake, or on the other side of the room, is the foundation of a great speech.

When it comes to quality, knowing the industry-standard brands is a must. The last thing you want is a microphone with feedback and screeches throughout the speeches – what about the rhyme there, hey! The two brands recommended are Shure and Rode. These are used in public speeches, concerts and function centres, and they do a fantastic job.

4. A Professional AND Energetic Attitude

It needs to be the perfect balance of both. You don’t want someone who is very tight and can’t break a smile. On the other hand, someone who is too casual can be detrimental to your party. Be sure to speak with the DJ (at least over the phone) to get to know them a little bit.

Ask them to send links and references to previous work they’ve completed, venues they’ve played at, including anything that gives you an idea of who they are. Your DJ must be well-spoken and well-groomed, with the ability to move with the flow of the party. Below is a shot of some of our team in DJ training – always smiling!

5. A Variety of Great Music

This can’t be missed – it’s a party, isn’t it? Your DJ should have music from a variety of genres. They should be legally obtained (purchased or obtained through legitimate means) to ensure they are of high quality.

Your DJ should have memberships and subscriptions to online music libraries and portals or even have the ability to purchase music on the go if they’re hit with a request they don’t have. Note: Your DJ must actually know the art of DJing also! Ask them for links to their music and mixes to get a taste of what the actual event will be like.

The Wrap

These are 5 things you must look for when hiring a DJ for your celebration in Canberra! A DJ with the right tools of the trade, coupled with a great attitude, is what’s required for you to be on the path to a memorable night.
