3 things we look for when hiring a Sydney DJ [Number 1 Will Surprise You!]

By October 14, 2019 No Comments

When hiring at Sydney DJ, it’s an exciting time for us at Star DJ. It’s an opportunity to look for brand-new talents and an opportunity for the team to grow and share what we’ve learnt. Today, we break down all the things that we look at when recruiting into our team.

If you’re looking at joining our particular team, or any team for that matter, have a scroll through these tips and let us know if you have any questions in the comments below.

  1. A Positive Attitude is EVERYTHING

One of the most important things to us is hiring someone who has a positive attitude. When hiring a Sydney DJ, they don’t necessarily need to know everything technically; that can be taught over time. Rather, we want them to be open-minded about everything taught, and ask lots of questions along the process. Further to this, having a positive attitude ensures that when they are playing at any of our events, they have a sense of energy that is both professional and bubbly.

Let’s step back and think about this for a moment. Would you rather:

a.)  A DJ who is amazing at mixing music, however, doesn’t get along very easily with guests and has no sense of personal skills. When organising logistics with them they are not proactive and it’s hard to get in contact with them.

OR!

b.) A DJ Who is great at mixing, however, gets along very well with all of your guests. When discussing logistics and music in the lead up to your event they ask the right questions and give you peace of mind that you’re in good hands.

2. They Must be Coachable

Building on from the previous point, anyone that we look at it when hiring a Sydney DJ must be coachable. What this means is that they have to possess the ability to digest information, challenge other people’s thoughts respectfully, and also challenge their own. We don’t know absolutely everything, and we’re also continuously learning.

With that said, we require the new recruit to demonstrate a passion for learning. We test for this by asking a lot of practice questions in our interview, including a lot of scenario based questions to get a feel of their thinking patterns and the type of action they would take. We don’t take this as gospel, however, it’s a good indicator for us.

3. They must have a genuine passion for music

Note how we said music. The passion doesn’t have to stem from DJing, because if it doesn’t come from DJing at the start, it will come in time. The reason for this is that the art of DJing requires you to be around music. This includes tasks like editing songs, curating playlists, and of course playing – whether practising at home or playing at an event. With this, having a passion for music will drive you as you’ll always be around it.

When looking to hire a Sydney DJ, having this passion also helps with training as the DJ should already have an understanding of the different artists, genres and songs, and if they don’t, they’ll quickly learn.

This passion also helps when practising at home. It supports the go-getter attitude the Star DJ team possess!

And there we have it! Three actionable tips to keep in mind when looking to apply to be a Sydney DJ. Let us know in the comments below if you have any other suggestions or tips!
